Play WoW in your browser: World of Warcraft with no download, free

Yes, you can play WoW in your browser. Lasthavens lets you play World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a in a browser tab, for free. There’s no 17 GB client to find, no launcher and nothing to install. You open lasthavens.com/play, make an account on the login screen and play, on a PC, a Mac, a Chromebook, an iPhone, an iPad or an Android phone. This post covers what that means, how to start, which devices it runs on, and the limits.

What “WoW in your browser” means here

There are two very different things people call playing WoW in a browser. One is streaming: the game runs on a computer in a data centre and your browser shows a video of it. The other is the game itself running in the page. Lasthavens is the second kind.

The game runs on your own device, in a browser you already have. Your graphics chip draws every frame, and your mouse and keyboard go straight into the game with no round trip to a distant computer.

The usual 3.3.5a setup WoW in your browser on Lasthavens
Before the login screen Find and download a client of about 17 GB About 50 MB, then cached by the browser
Software to install The client, sometimes Wine or a virtual machine None beyond a browser
Realm list to edit Yes No
Devices Mostly a Windows PC Computers, Chromebooks, phones and tablets

How to start

  1. Open lasthavens.com/play in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari.
  2. Wait for the first download, about 50 MB. Later visits load from your browser’s cache.
  3. On the login screen, click Create Account. Choose an account name and a password. An email address is optional.
  4. Click Login, make a character and enter the world.

On a computer, press Alt+Enter or the Fullscreen button on the login screen to fill the screen. On a phone, turn it sideways first: the game is laid out for landscape. The browser guide has the same steps in short form.

What you need

  • A recent browser. Chrome, Edge or Firefox on Windows, Mac, Linux and ChromeOS. Safari on iPhone and iPad, iOS 17 or newer. Chrome on Android.
  • A device made in the last several years. The game runs on it, not on a server.
  • A steady connection. It’s an online game, and new areas load as you reach them. Wi-Fi is best on a phone for the first visit.
  • A free account, made on the login screen.

Devices that play WoW in a browser

One realm and one account, whichever device you pick up. Each has its own guide:

  • Windows PC. Mouse and keyboard, the way the original plays. See the browser guide.
  • Mac. Intel or Apple silicon, with no Boot Camp, Wine or virtual machine. See playing on a Mac.
  • Linux. No Wine, Lutris or Proton. Make sure the browser uses your graphics card; WoW on Linux shows how.
  • Chromebook. It runs in Chrome like any other tab, with no Linux mode. See the Chromebook guide.
  • iPhone and iPad. Safari, with Add to Home Screen to play full screen. See the iPhone and iPad guide.
  • Android. Chrome, or the small Lasthavens app. See the Android guide.
  • Steam Deck and other handhelds. The Deck’s browser plus its built-in controller. See WoW on a Steam Deck.

A laptop that won’t let you install anything can often still play, if you’re allowed to: playing on a browser-only laptop covers what to check first.

What it’s like to play

It’s Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a, so it looks and plays like the game you remember: the same interface, the same key bindings, macros and right-click camera.

  • Addons don’t need copying into folders. The AddOn Library at character select has curated addons such as Questie, Deadly Boss Mods and WeakAuras, which you switch on per browser. See the best WotLK addons.
  • Phones and tablets get touch controls made from the game’s own buttons: a movement stick, an arc of action buttons under your thumb, tap to target and hold for a right click.
  • Controllers work too. Plug in or pair an Xbox, PlayStation or Bluetooth pad and the game picks it up. See playing with a controller.
  • Your characters live on the realm, so they follow you from device to device. Settings, key bindings and addon choices are saved by the browser you play in.

The realm

Lasthavens is one PvP realm with twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring, and it’s free to play. Bring a friend with Recruit-a-Friend and you both earn triple experience from kills and quests while you’re grouped together. New to Wrath? The beginner’s guide covers your first hours, and the leveling guide has a route from 1 to 80.

The honest limits

  • It’s Wrath of the Lich King, not retail. The game is patch 3.3.5a. If you want the current game, this isn’t it. WotLK vs Classic vs retail compares them.
  • It’s a private realm. Lasthavens is not run by Blizzard, and characters from Blizzard’s realms don’t come with you. Use a password you don’t use anywhere else.
  • You need a connection. The first trip to a new zone takes a moment, then it comes from the cache.
  • The browser matters. Browsers inside other apps, such as Discord or Instagram, can’t run it. Open the link in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari itself.
  • Weak machines need lower settings. The game still draws every frame on your device. WotLK settings for a low-end PC goes through what helps.
  • Busy raids are harder on a phone. Questing, dungeons and battlegrounds play well on a phone, but big fights and crowded cities ask a lot of older ones.

If it won’t load

If the page says your browser can’t run the game, update the browser and turn on hardware acceleration in its settings. If the download stops partway, reload the page; what was already downloaded is kept. The game won’t load covers the rest, and you can ask in our Discord.

Play WoW in your browser now

That’s all there is to it: a browser tab, about 50 MB and a free account. Open the game, click Create Account on the login screen, and you can be making a character in Northrend within a few minutes.
