A Wrath of the Lich King private server you can play on your phone
Almost every Wrath of the Lich King private server needs a Windows or Mac computer with a 17 GB client on it. That leaves phone players with remote desktop, streaming, or a dodgy “WoW mobile” APK. Lasthavens is different: it plays in your phone’s browser, with touch controls built from the game’s own buttons, on iPhone, iPad and Android. This post covers what that’s like, what you need, and what is still easier on a computer.
Why most WotLK servers don’t work on a phone
A 3.3.5a private server is just the realm. You bring the game: a copy of the 3.3.5a client, installed on a computer, pointed at the server. There’s no version of that client for iOS or Android, so on most servers a phone is limited to running a remote desktop to a PC at home.
Lasthavens plays in a web page instead. Because a phone’s browser can run it, the phone runs the game, with no stream and no PC in between. Why there’s no official WoW mobile app goes through the other options people try, and which to avoid.
What you need
- iPhone or iPad: Safari, on iOS or iPadOS 17 or newer. Other browsers on iPhone can fail where Safari works, so the page sends you to Safari.
- Android: a recent Chrome, or the Lasthavens app, which opens the same game in Chrome without its bars.
- Wi-Fi for the first visit, which downloads about 50 MB before the login screen. Later visits load from the phone’s cache.
- A free account, made on the login screen with Create Account. An email address is optional.
Getting started
- Open lasthavens.com/play in Safari or Chrome.
- Turn the phone sideways. The game is laid out for landscape.
- Tap Create Account, pick a name and a password, then Login.
- Make a character and play.
To play full screen, add it to your home screen: in Safari, Share then Add to Home Screen; in Chrome, Install app from the menu. The iPhone and iPad guide and the Android guide have every step.
What the touch controls do
The controls are the game’s own interface, sized for thumbs, rather than a generic overlay:
- Move with the stick in the bottom left, which centres wherever your thumb lands.
- Fight with the arc of action buttons in the bottom right. They’re your real action bar buttons, with cooldowns and range.
- Heal by dragging a healing spell from the arc onto a party frame, your own frame or a player in the world.
- Tap to click, hold for a right click to loot, sell or use items, drag to turn the camera and pinch to zoom.
- Chat with the chat button, or the quick phrases and emotes for short replies.
You can change the button and stick sizes, the camera speed and more under Interface Options › Touch, including a left-handed layout. Drag-to-heal and battery saver covers healing on a phone in more detail.
Prefer real buttons? Pair a Bluetooth controller, or clip your phone into a Backbone, Kishi or similar, and the game picks it up. See playing WotLK with a controller.
Same account, any device
Your characters live on the realm, not on the phone. Level on your PC in the evening and run a dungeon from your phone on the train, with the same character. Switching apps for a moment doesn’t throw you back to the login screen either: come back and the game reconnects you.
Battery and heat
The game draws every frame on your phone, just as it would on a computer. To keep it cool, phones run at 30 frames per second by default. You can raise or lower that, and lower the render scale, under Interface Options › Touch. Long sessions are kinder to your battery with the phone plugged in.
What is still easier on a computer
To be honest about it, a phone is a smaller screen than WotLK was designed for:
- Questing, gathering, dungeons and battlegrounds play well.
- Busy raids are harder. There’s a lot to watch, and older phones can run short of memory in big fights and crowded cities.
- Menus with lots of small buttons, such as the talent tree or a full bag, take more care with a thumb than with a mouse.
Many players do a bit of both: the serious raiding on a computer, everything else wherever they are.
If it won’t load
The most common cause is opening the link inside another app’s browser, such as Discord or Instagram. Open it in Safari or Chrome instead. Closing other tabs helps on older phones. The game won’t load has the rest.
Play Lasthavens on your phone
Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm: one PvP realm with twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring. Open the game on your phone, turn it sideways and make your account.
