Can you play World of Warcraft in a browser? Yes, and here's how

Yes, you can play World of Warcraft in a browser, but how depends on what “in a browser” means to you. There are three ways people try to play WoW on a device that can’t install it, and only one of them runs the game in the browser itself. This post compares them honestly, explains where Lasthavens fits, and walks you through starting a character in a few minutes.

Three ways to play WoW without installing it

Game streaming Remote desktop Lasthavens
Where the game runs A server in a data centre Your own computer at home The device in front of you
What you need first The official game and a supported service A computer that runs WoW, left switched on A recent browser
What the internet carries A video of the screen A video of your desktop Game data and realm traffic
Input delay A network round trip on every click A network round trip on every click None beyond normal WoW latency
Version of WoW Whatever the service supports Whatever you have installed Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a

Game streaming

Cloud gaming services run the game on a powerful machine and send you the picture as video. This can show World of Warcraft in a browser window, but you still need the official game, and for retail WoW its subscription. Every frame is a video stream, so on a weak connection the picture turns blocky and your clicks arrive late. Which games a service supports also changes over time, so check the service itself before paying for anything. Streaming services don’t connect to private realms.

Remote desktop

If you already play WoW on a computer, remote desktop software lets you see and control it from another device. It plays exactly what you play at home, addons included. But the computer has to stay on, the picture lags behind your clicks, and you’re not really playing on the device in your hands.

The client itself, running in the page

Lasthavens takes the third route. The game runs on your own device, in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, with nothing to install. Your mouse and keyboard go straight into the game, and the picture is drawn at your screen’s resolution, not decoded from a video.

Why the official game doesn’t run in a browser

World of Warcraft has always been a big download. A 3.3.5a install is about 17 GB, and modern WoW is far larger. Blizzard’s game is played through its own installed client, so a browser can only show it by streaming it from somewhere else.

Lasthavens doesn’t need that download. The first visit downloads about 50 MB to reach the login screen. More arrives as you travel, and your browser caches it, so later visits start faster and familiar places don’t load again. Playing WoW with no download explains what does and doesn’t get loaded.

  4. Make a character and play with the touch controls: a stick bottom left, an arc of action buttons bottom right, tap to target and hold for a right click.

To play full screen on a phone, use Add to Home Screen in Safari, or Install app in Chrome’s menu. The iPhone and iPad guide and Android guide have every step.

Not sure which class to pick? The best class to level solo compares all ten.

Which devices it runs on

Your characters live on the realm, so you can start on a laptop and carry on from your phone with the same character.

The honest limits

  • It’s one version of WoW. Lasthavens is Wrath of the Lich King, patch 3.3.5a. What WoW 3.3.5a is explains what that includes: all of Northrend, every raid up to Icecrown Citadel and the Ruby Sanctum, and the Dungeon Finder.
  • It’s a private realm, not Blizzard’s. Your Blizzard account and characters aren’t involved. Never reuse a password from Blizzard or your email.
  • It still runs on your hardware. A weak laptop needs lower settings; WotLK settings for a low-end PC helps. Busy raids and crowded cities are hardest on older phones.
  • It needs a real browser. The small browsers inside Discord, Instagram and similar apps can’t run it.
  • Settings stay with the browser. Key bindings, graphics settings and addon choices are saved by the browser you play in, so a new browser or device starts with the defaults.

If something goes wrong, the game won’t load covers the usual causes.

Which route is right for you?

  • You want the current retail game: streaming or remote desktop, with the official game and a strong connection.
  • You want to play WoW in a browser with nothing to install, on whatever device you have: Lasthavens, as long as Wrath of the Lich King is the version you’re after.

Lasthavens is free to play: one PvP realm with twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring. Open the game, click Create Account, and you’ll be choosing a class in a few minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you play World of Warcraft in a web browser?

Yes. Lasthavens, a Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm, plays in a browser tab on your own device, with no download and no launcher. Game streaming and remote desktop can also show WoW in a browser window, but there the game runs on another computer.

Is browser WoW a stream?

Not on Lasthavens. The game runs on your own device, so your own graphics chip draws every frame. Only realm traffic and game data travel over the internet, as they always did in WoW.

Can I play retail World of Warcraft in a browser?

Not as a native browser game. The current game is played through Blizzard's own client, so in a browser you would be streaming it or using remote desktop. Lasthavens runs Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a, not retail.

Do I need a Blizzard account to play WoW in a browser on Lasthavens?

No. Lasthavens is a private realm and is not run by Blizzard. You make a free Lasthavens account on the game's login screen with Create Account, using a name and password you don't use anywhere else.

Does browser World of Warcraft work on a Chromebook or phone?

Yes. It runs in Chrome on a Chromebook, in Safari on iPhone and iPad (iOS 17 or newer), and in Chrome or the Lasthavens app on Android. Phones and tablets get touch controls made from the game's own buttons.

Can I use addons when I play WoW in a browser?

Yes. You can't copy addon folders in, but the AddOn Library at character select has curated 3.3.5a addons, such as Questie, Deadly Boss Mods and WeakAuras, that you switch on for the browser you play in.
