Free WotLK private servers in 2026, and how to choose one
Wrath of the Lich King, patch 3.3.5a, is still one of the most played versions on private servers. Free servers differ a lot, and switching later means starting a new character, so a few minutes of checking first is worth it.
Before you pick one
- Is it really free? Look at the shop. If it sells gear, levels or gold, players who pay will be ahead of you.
- What are the rates? “x1” is the original speed. Higher rates level you faster but skip more of the world.
- How do you get the client? Most servers need you to download a 17 GB 3.3.5a client from somewhere and point it at their realm. Only download it from a source you trust.
- Do you need an account email? Make your password unique: a private server is not run by Blizzard.
- Is anyone playing? Ask in the server’s Discord how busy the realm is at the times you play.
Staying safe
- Never use the password from a Blizzard account or your email on a private server.
- Don’t run programs a server sends you besides the game client itself.
- Be wary of anyone asking for payment outside the server’s own website.
