Playing WoW on a laptop where you can't install anything
Plenty of laptops won’t let you install anything: a school laptop, a work machine, a library computer, a family laptop with a locked-down account. World of Warcraft normally needs an installer, a launcher and a lot of disk space, so on those machines it’s simply not an option. Lasthavens runs Wrath of the Lich King in a browser tab instead, so there is nothing to install. This post covers how that works on a locked-down laptop, and what to check before you start.
Check the rules first
A laptop that belongs to your school, employer or library comes with rules about what you can use it for, and some don’t allow games at all. Check your school’s or workplace’s policy before you play, and stick to it. Nothing on this page is a way around those rules: if the laptop’s owner has blocked games or this site, that’s their call.
If the laptop is yours and only your own account is restricted, the same applies to whoever set it up.
Why a browser game works where an installer doesn’t
Installing a program changes the computer: it writes files to protected folders and adds itself to the system, which is exactly what a locked-down account prevents. A web page doesn’t do any of that. Lasthavens plays in a web page, in Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. It runs inside the browser like any other site, and it’s not a video stream.
So on a laptop where you’re allowed to browse and allowed to play:
- Nothing to install. No setup file, no launcher, no administrator password.
- No 17 GB download. The first visit loads about 50 MB to reach the login screen, and the rest arrives as you play.
- Nothing left behind but the browser’s cache, which goes away when the browser’s data is cleared.
Starting the game
- Open lasthavens.com/play in Chrome, Edge or Firefox.
- Click Create Account, pick a name and a password, then Login. An email address is optional.
- Make a character and play.
Press Alt+Enter, or the Fullscreen button on the login screen, to fill the screen. The browser guide covers the basics, and the Chromebook guide covers school Chromebooks.
Things that are different on a shared or managed laptop
- The cache may not stay. Some shared computers wipe the browser’s data when you log out. Then each session starts with the 50 MB download again. Your characters are safe either way: they’re stored on the realm, not on the laptop.
- Settings may not stay either. Key bindings and graphics settings are saved by the browser, so on a laptop that resets, you set them again each time.
- Log out when you’re done. On a computer other people use, log out of the game and don’t leave your login saved in the browser. Use a password you don’t use anywhere else.
- Graphics may be limited. If the page says your browser can’t run the game, the browser isn’t giving the game graphics acceleration. On a managed laptop that can be a setting the administrator controls, and only they can change it.
Getting it to run well on a modest laptop
School and office laptops are rarely built for games, but WotLK came out in 2008 and doesn’t need much once a few settings come down:
- Use the Browser settings. Open Interface Options and choose Browser, or click the gear button on the edge of the minimap. Lower Render scale to draw fewer pixels, and set a Frame rate limit to keep the laptop cooler.
- Turn down the heavy video options: view distance, ground clutter, particle density and multisampling.
- Close other tabs, especially video.
- Plug in. Many laptops slow their graphics on battery.
WotLK settings for a low-end PC goes through every option that helps.
If it doesn’t load
If the page won’t load at all, the network may block it, and that’s a decision for whoever runs the network. For anything else, such as a stalled download or a blank page, see the game won’t load.
Play on your own devices too
The same account works on any device with a browser, so you can carry on at home on a PC, a Mac, or your phone. Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm: one PvP realm with twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring. When you’re somewhere you’re allowed to play, open the game and make your account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play WoW on a laptop that won't let me install anything?
Often, yes, if you're allowed to. Lasthavens runs Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a in a browser tab, so there is no setup file, no launcher and no administrator password. Check your school's or workplace's rules first: if games or the site are blocked, that is the owner's call.
Do I lose my characters if the laptop wipes the browser?
No. Your characters are stored on the realm, not on the laptop. Some shared computers clear the browser's data when you log out, so the 50 MB first download and your settings and key bindings may need redoing each session.
Why does it say my browser can't run the game?
The browser isn't giving the game graphics acceleration. On a managed laptop that can be a setting the administrator controls, and only they can change it.
How do I make it run well on a school or office laptop?
Open Interface Options, choose Browser, and lower Render scale and set a Frame rate limit. Turn down view distance, ground clutter, particle density and multisampling, close other tabs, and plug in.
