Every Wrath of the Lich King dungeon, by level

Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a has dungeons for every stage of the game: the original classic instances from level 13 to 60, the Burning Crusade instances in Outland from 60 to 70, and the Northrend dungeons from 70 to 80. This page lists all of them in level order, with where to find each one, followed by the raids you can step into at level 80.

How to read the level ranges

The ranges below are the commonly cited suggested levels for each dungeon. The Dungeon Finder (press I in game) lets you queue a little below and above them, and it only offers dungeons that suit your level. Inside the suggested range the enemies give good experience and the loot is an upgrade. Go in near the bottom of the range and the fights are harder; near the top they are easier but the rewards matter less.

The Dungeon Finder teleports you to the instance, so you don’t need to travel to the entrance. When the run ends it sends you back to where you queued. If you’d rather walk in, the location column tells you where the entrance is.

On Lasthavens you earn twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring, so you will move through each range faster than the original pace. It often pays to queue for a dungeon as soon as it unlocks.

Classic dungeons, levels 13 to 60

These are the original Azeroth instances in the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor. A few sit inside or next to one faction’s territory, which matters if you plan to walk there.

Upper Blackrock Spire, above Lower Blackrock Spire, is the harder upper half of the mountain, for level 60 groups.

If you are Horde, Ragefire Chasm is an easy first dungeon because it is in your own capital. Alliance players usually start with The Deadmines or Wailing Caverns. The Dungeon Finder makes faction less of a problem, since it teleports you straight in.

Burning Crusade dungeons, levels 60 to 70

Once you step through the Dark Portal in the Blasted Lands, Outland’s dungeons take over. They come in groups called wings, each sharing one hub: Hellfire Citadel, Coilfang Reservoir, Auchindoun and Tempest Keep. The Caverns of Time are back in Tanaris, and Magisters’ Terrace is on the Isle of Quel’Danas.

Magisters’ Terrace 70 Isle of Quel’Danas

Many players skip most of Outland’s dungeons in Wrath, because Northrend opens at level 68 and its gear quickly replaces Outland’s. They are still worth a run or two while you level, for the experience and the quests that send you inside.

Each of these dungeons also has a heroic version for level 70 characters, with tougher enemies and better loot.

Northrend dungeons, levels 70 to 80

These are the dungeons Wrath of the Lich King added. Each one has a normal mode for leveling and a heroic mode for level 80 characters.

Dungeon Level Location
Utgarde Keep 70-72 Howling Fjord
The Nexus 71-73 Coldarra, Borean Tundra
Azjol-Nerub 72-74 Dragonblight
Ahn’kahet: The Old Kingdom 73-75 Dragonblight
Drak’Tharon Keep 74-76 Grizzly Hills, on the Zul’Drak border
The Violet Hold 75-77 Dalaran
Gundrak 76-78 Zul’Drak
Halls of Stone 77-79 Ulduar, The Storm Peaks
Halls of Lightning 80 Ulduar, The Storm Peaks
The Oculus 80 Coldarra, Borean Tundra
Utgarde Pinnacle 80 Howling Fjord
The Culling of Stratholme 80 Caverns of Time, Tanaris
Trial of the Champion 80 Argent Tournament Grounds, Icecrown
The Forge of Souls 80 Frozen Halls, Icecrown Citadel
Pit of Saron 80 Frozen Halls, Icecrown Citadel
Halls of Reflection 80 Frozen Halls, Icecrown Citadel

Utgarde Keep is the natural first stop if you arrive by boat in Howling Fjord, and The Nexus suits players who start in Borean Tundra. Azjol-Nerub and Ahn’kahet sit together in Dragonblight, at the centre of the continent.

The three Frozen Halls dungeons tell one story and are meant to be run in order: The Forge of Souls, then Pit of Saron, then Halls of Reflection. They are tuned for players who have already geared up in the other level 80 heroics.

Northrend raids at level 80

Raids are for larger groups. Every Wrath raid has a 10-player and a 25-player version, and some add heroic difficulty. Here they are in the order they arrived.

Raid Location What it is
Naxxramas Above Dragonblight The floating necropolis of Kel’Thuzad, 15 bosses in four wings and a final chamber
The Obsidian Sanctum Below Wyrmrest Temple, Dragonblight Sartharion and his three drakes, harder the more drakes you leave alive
The Eye of Eternity Coldarra, Borean Tundra A single fight against Malygos
Vault of Archavon Wintergrasp Open to the faction that controls Wintergrasp
Ulduar The Storm Peaks The titan city, 14 bosses including Yogg-Saron
Trial of the Crusader Argent Tournament Grounds, Icecrown Five encounters in the Crusaders’ Coliseum
Onyxia’s Lair Dustwallow Marsh The classic dragon raid, rebuilt for level 80
Icecrown Citadel Icecrown 12 bosses, ending with the Lich King
The Ruby Sanctum Below Wyrmrest Temple, Dragonblight A short raid ending with Halion

Naxxramas, The Obsidian Sanctum and Vault of Archavon are the usual first raids for a fresh level 80 character. Ulduar, Trial of the Crusader and Icecrown Citadel follow as your gear improves. Raid encounters have many mechanics to track, and Deadly Boss Mods, which you can switch on from the AddOn Library at the character select screen, will warn you about most of them.

Tips for running dungeons while you level

  • Grab the quests first. Dungeons have quests near their entrances or in the nearest town. Pick them up before you go in, since the quest rewards are often better than the drops.
  • Know your role. The Dungeon Finder asks whether you will tank, heal or deal damage. Choose the one your talents support.
  • Mind the range. A dungeon at the very top of its range gives less experience per kill than one in the middle.
  • Plan your route. A leveling guide helps you fit dungeons between quest zones without losing time.
