How to play World of Warcraft on a Chromebook, without Linux, Wine or streaming

A Chromebook can’t install World of Warcraft. ChromeOS doesn’t run Windows programs, and the game was only ever released for Windows and Mac. People still find ways, and one of them is much simpler than the rest: Lasthavens plays Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a in Chrome, so on a Chromebook you open a tab and play. This post covers the usual routes, what tends to go wrong with each, and how to get the most out of the browser route.

The usual ways to get WoW on a Chromebook

Linux and Wine

Most Chromebooks can switch on a Linux environment in Settings. Inside it you can install Wine, download a Windows copy of the game and try to run it. It sometimes works, but there are a lot of catches:

  • The download. A 3.3.5a client is about 17 GB, and many Chromebooks have small drives.
  • Speed. The game is translated twice over, from Windows to Linux and from DirectX to your graphics chip, on a machine that was built to be light rather than fast.
  • ARM Chromebooks. Many Chromebooks don’t use an Intel or AMD processor, and the Windows client was built for those.
  • Managed Chromebooks. On a school or work Chromebook the administrator can turn Linux off completely.

Streaming

Cloud gaming services run a game on a computer somewhere else and send you the picture. That needs a fast, steady connection, a subscription, and a service that offers the game you want to play. They don’t connect to private realms.

Remote desktop

If you have a Windows PC at home, you can stream it to a Chromebook with remote desktop software. It works, but the PC has to be on, the picture lags behind your clicks, and you’re not really playing on the Chromebook.

The browser route

Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King realm that plays in a web page. It is not a stream: the game runs on the Chromebook itself, in Chrome.

What that means on a Chromebook:

Windows client through Linux and Wine Lasthavens in Chrome
Download before playing About 17 GB About 50 MB to reach the login screen, cached after that
Needs Linux turned on Yes No
Works on ARM Chromebooks Often not Yes, if graphics acceleration is on in Chrome
Realm list to edit Yes No
Same characters on other devices Only where the client is installed Any computer, phone or tablet with a browser

Start playing

  1. Open lasthavens.com/play in Chrome.
  2. Wait for the first download, about 50 MB. Later visits load from Chrome’s cache.
  3. Click Create Account, pick a name and a password, then Login. An email address is optional.
  4. Make a character and play.

The Chromebook guide has the same steps in short form.

Making it run well on a Chromebook

Chromebooks range from cheap school laptops to fast machines, so it’s worth a few minutes in the settings.

  • Play full screen. Press the full screen key on the top row of the keyboard, or the Fullscreen button on the login screen. In full screen, Esc still closes the game’s menus; hold it to leave full screen.
  • Lower the cost of each frame. Open Interface Options and choose Browser, or click the gear button on the edge of the minimap. Render scale draws the whole game at fewer pixels, and Frame rate limit caps how hard the Chromebook works. Both help weak machines and battery life.
  • Turn down the expensive video options. View distance, ground clutter, particle density and multisampling cost the most. WotLK settings for a low-end PC goes through each one.
  • Close other tabs. Video and big web apps share the same memory and graphics chip.
  • Plug in. Many Chromebooks slow down on battery.
  • Expect cities to be harder. Dalaran and crowded battles were heavy in 2010, and they still are.

Touch screen Chromebooks

On a Chromebook with a touch screen, the game shows its touch controls: a stick to move, an arc of action buttons and taps for clicks. If you’d rather use the keyboard and touchpad, turn them off under Interface Options › Touch. A tablet-style Chromebook with the keyboard folded away plays much like an Android tablet; the Android guide covers those controls.

The Chromebook keyboard

Chromebook keyboards have no F1 to F12 keys, and WoW’s defaults use some of them, mostly for targeting party members. You can rebind those in the game’s Key Bindings, or simply click the party frames. A USB or Bluetooth mouse makes turning the camera much easier than a touchpad. A controller works too: see playing WotLK with a controller.

If it doesn’t start

If the page says your browser can’t run the game, Chrome isn’t giving it graphics acceleration. Check that ChromeOS and Chrome are up to date, and that graphics acceleration is on in Chrome’s settings. On a managed Chromebook, the administrator may have turned it off. The game won’t load guide covers the other common problems.

Play Lasthavens on your Chromebook

Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm: one PvP realm with twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring. Your characters live on the realm, so you can start on a Chromebook and carry on from a PC, a phone or a tablet. Open the game and make your account on the login screen.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Chromebook run World of Warcraft?

A Chromebook can't install the game, because ChromeOS doesn't run Windows programs. It can play Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a on Lasthavens, which runs the client in Chrome with nothing to install.

Do I need Linux or Wine to play WoW on a Chromebook?

No. Lasthavens runs in Chrome like any other tab, so you don't need to turn on Linux, install Wine or download a 17 GB client. It also works on ARM Chromebooks if graphics acceleration is on in Chrome.

Does it work on a touch screen Chromebook?

Yes. On a Chromebook with a touch screen the game shows its touch controls. If you'd rather use the keyboard and touchpad, turn them off under Interface Options › Touch.

My Chromebook has no F1 to F12 keys. Does that matter?

Only a little. WoW's defaults use some of them, mostly for targeting party members. You can rebind those in the game's Key Bindings, or click the party frames instead.

What if the game won't start on my Chromebook?

If the page says your browser can't run the game, Chrome isn't giving it graphics acceleration. Update ChromeOS and Chrome and make sure graphics acceleration is on. On a managed Chromebook, the administrator may have turned it off.
