WotLK vs Classic vs retail WoW, and which version you should play

If you want a slow, harsh world where every level is earned, play vanilla or Classic Era. If you want the newest content, fast leveling and a polished modern game with constant updates, play retail. If you want something in between, Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a is the version many players settle on: the old talent trees and a world that still feels big, with a Dungeon Finder, 10 and 25 player raids, and leveling that moves at a reasonable pace. The rest of this page explains the differences so you can decide which one suits you.

The three versions in short

  • Vanilla and Classic Era recreate the game as it was before its first expansion, with a level cap of 60, the original continents and the original 40 player raids.
  • Wrath of the Lich King is the second expansion. Patch 3.3.5a is its final version, with a level cap of 80, Northrend, the Death Knight class and the Icecrown Citadel raid. Read what WoW 3.3.5a is for the full picture.
  • Retail is the live, current World of Warcraft, with every expansion since and the newest systems, zones and raids.

Leveling pace: WotLK vs Classic vs retail

Classic Era leveling is slow by design. Quests send you across zones, experience comes in small amounts, and many classes spend a long time killing monsters between quests. You get your first mount at level 40. Plenty of players love this, because reaching 60 feels like a real achievement, but it asks for a lot of time.

Wrath of the Lich King sits in the middle. By 3.3.5a the experience needed for the old world levels had been reduced compared with launch vanilla, riding is available from level 20, and heirloom items add bonus experience for players with a character already at the top. You still travel through the old world, Outland and Northrend in turn, so the journey keeps its shape. Our WotLK leveling guide walks through the route from 1 to 80.

Retail leveling is the fastest of the three. Zones scale to your level, so you can quest almost anywhere, and new characters are guided towards the current expansion fairly quickly. It is convenient, though some players feel the old zones matter less as a result.

Dungeons, raids and group content

Dungeons

In Classic Era you build a group by asking in chat, then walk or get summoned to the dungeon. It is slow, but it is also how many players found their friends and guilds.

Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a has the Dungeon Finder, which was added in patch 3.3. It builds a group from several realms, teleports you inside and gives a bonus for the first random dungeon of the day. Heroic modes of every Northrend dungeon give end game players a reason to keep running them. See WotLK dungeons by level for which to run and when.

Retail has its own group finder tools and Mythic+ dungeons, a system where groups push through timed runs that get harder as the keys go up. Players who enjoy competitive dungeon runs often see this as retail’s strongest feature.

Raids

Classic Era raids are big. Molten Core and Blackwing Lair take 40 players, which makes organising a raid a project in itself and gives raid nights a large, busy feel.

Wrath of the Lich King moved to 10 and 25 player versions of each raid, which made raiding far easier for smaller guilds and groups of friends. Its raids include Naxxramas, Ulduar, Trial of the Crusader and Icecrown Citadel, and the later ones add heroic modes on top. Ulduar and Icecrown Citadel are widely regarded as two of the best raids the game has had. Read the Icecrown Citadel raid guide to see what the last raid looks like.

Retail offers several difficulty levels for each raid, from an easier mode for people who want to see the story up to the hardest mode chased by top guilds.

Talents vs modern systems

The talent system is one of the clearest differences between the versions.

  • Classic Era uses three talent trees per class. You spend one point per level from level 10, so you have 51 points at 60. Changing your spec costs gold at a trainer, and the cost rises each time.
  • Wrath of the Lich King keeps the same three trees but goes up to 71 points at 80, with powerful new talents at the bottom of each tree. It adds dual talent specialization, so you can keep two specs and switch between them, and glyphs, which tweak your spells and abilities.
  • Retail has redesigned talents more than once. Its current trees are a newer design with class and specialization choices, and its systems around gear and character power change with each expansion.

Players who like Wrath’s version usually say it gives real choice without being overwhelming. You can follow a well known build or experiment, and once you learn your class the system stays the same for the whole expansion. Retail players often prefer the modern trees for being easier to change between activities.

The feel of the world

Classic Era feels dangerous and slow. Monsters hit hard, travel is mostly on foot or on flight paths, and you meet other players everywhere because everyone is out in the world.

Wrath of the Lich King keeps most of that sense of place. Northrend is one of the most loved continents in the game, from the fjords of Howling Fjord to the frozen wastes of Icecrown. The story of Arthas runs through the whole expansion and pays off in Icecrown Citadel, which is a big part of why players love WotLK. Flying arrives late, so you still see the world from the ground for most of your first trip.

Retail is the most convenient. Portals, fast travel and level scaling mean you spend less time getting places. The world is huge after so many expansions, but most of the action is in the current one.

Which WoW version should you play?

There is no single right answer. It depends on what you want from the game.

Play Classic Era if you want the original experience, you enjoy slow progress, and you are happy for the journey to 60 to be the main part of the game.

Play retail if you want the newest content, regular updates, Mythic+ dungeons and the most modern systems, and you do not mind a faster, more streamlined world.

Play Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a if you want:

  • the classic talent trees and class design, with dual specialization and glyphs
  • a world that still feels big and social, but leveling that respects your time
  • a Dungeon Finder to get into groups quickly
  • raids at 10 and 25 players instead of 40
  • one of the most complete storylines in the game, ending with the Lich King

That middle ground is why Wrath has stayed so popular years after its release. Blizzard did run Wrath of the Lich King Classic realms, but those moved on to later expansions, so most people who want to play Wrath today do it on a 3.3.5a realm.
