Playing Wrath of the Lich King on a Steam Deck or other handheld PC
A Steam Deck is a good fit for Wrath of the Lich King: a decent screen, a controller built in, and trackpads for the menus. The usual way to get a 3.3.5a private server on it is to copy over a 17 GB Windows client and run it through Proton. Lasthavens needs none of that. The game runs in a web browser, the Deck has one, and the game supports controllers. This post covers setting it up, what the buttons do, and what to expect.
Why the browser instead of Proton
The Deck runs SteamOS, which is Linux. The 3.3.5a client is a Windows program, so the usual route is to add it to Steam as a non-Steam game and run it with Proton, after finding and copying the client and editing its realm list. That can work, but it’s a lot of setup, and playing WoW on Linux lists what tends to go wrong.
Lasthavens plays in a web page. On a Deck, that means:
- No client to copy. The first visit loads about 50 MB to reach the login screen, then the rest as you play, cached by the browser.
- No Proton, no realm list.
- Your characters aren’t tied to the Deck. They live on the realm, so you can play the same character on your PC or your phone.
Setting it up
1. Get a browser
Hold the power button, choose Switch to Desktop, and open the Discover store. Install Chrome or Firefox. Either works.
2. Try it in Desktop Mode
Open lasthavens.com/play in the browser. Click Create Account, choose a name and a password, then Login. In Desktop Mode the right trackpad works as a mouse and the triggers click, which is all you need to make an account and a character. Press the Fullscreen button on the login screen to fill the display.
3. Add it to Game Mode
To play from Game Mode with the controls set up as a gamepad, add the browser to Steam: in Desktop Mode, open Steam, choose Add a Non-Steam Game, and pick your browser. Back in Game Mode, start it from your library and open lasthavens.com/play.
If the game doesn’t react to the sticks and buttons, open the controller settings for the browser in Steam and choose a gamepad layout rather than a keyboard-and-mouse one. Browsers also only connect a controller after it’s been used on the page, so press a button once with the game open.
What the buttons do
The controller layout is the same on every device. The controller post has the full table; in short:
| Control | Action |
|---|---|
| Left stick | Move and strafe |
| Right stick | Turn your character |
| A | Jump |
| X, Y, B | Action buttons 1, 2 and 3 |
| R1, R2, L2 | Action buttons 4, 5 and 6 |
| D-pad | Action buttons 7, 8, 9 and 0 |
| L1 | Target the next enemy |
| Start (Menu) | Game menu |
| Back (View) | Open your bags |
| Left stick click | Auto-run |
The buttons press the game’s own keys, so changing a key binding in the game changes what that button does. Menus such as vendors, loot and talents are still easiest with a pointer: the right trackpad (if your layout maps it to the mouse) or the touch screen.
The touch screen
The Deck has a touch screen, and the game has touch controls: a stick, an arc of action buttons and taps for clicks. If you’d like them, switch them on under Interface Options › Touch. Many players find the controller plus the occasional tap is the comfortable mix.
Battery and smoothness
WotLK doesn’t need much, but the game still draws every frame on the Deck, so a few settings make a difference:
- Frame rate limit. Open Interface Options and choose Browser, or click the gear button on the minimap’s edge. A limit of 30 or 40 frames per second saves a lot of battery and plays fine.
- Render scale. In the same panel, lowering it draws fewer pixels.
- Video options. View distance, ground clutter, particles and multisampling cost the most. See WotLK settings for a low-end PC.
The Deck’s screen is small, so you may want the game’s UI Scale a little larger in the Video options.
Other handhelds
Windows handhelds such as the ROG Ally or Legion Go are simpler still: they’re PCs, so open lasthavens.com/play in Chrome or Edge as you would on a desktop. Their built-in controls usually appear to the browser as a standard controller, so the layout above applies. Linux-based handhelds work like the Deck, in an up-to-date browser.
If it doesn’t start
If the page says your browser can’t run the game, the browser isn’t giving it graphics acceleration. Make sure it’s up to date, try the other browser, and check that graphics acceleration is on in its settings. The Linux post explains how to check, and the game won’t load covers the rest.
Play Lasthavens on your Deck
Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm: one PvP realm with twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring. Open the game, make your account, and take Northrend to the sofa.
Frequently asked questions
Can I play WoW on a Steam Deck without Proton?
Yes. Lasthavens runs Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a in a web browser, so on a Steam Deck you install Chrome or Firefox from the Discover store and open lasthavens.com/play. There is no client to copy and no realm list to edit.
How do I play it from Game Mode?
In Desktop Mode, open Steam, choose Add a Non-Steam Game and pick your browser. Start it from your library in Game Mode and open lasthavens.com/play. If the buttons do nothing, choose a gamepad layout for the browser in Steam's controller settings.
Does the Steam Deck's controller work in the game?
Yes. The sticks move and turn, A jumps, and the face buttons, triggers and D-pad press action buttons. Browsers only connect a controller after it's been used on the page, so press a button once with the game open.
Does it work on a ROG Ally or Legion Go?
Yes. Windows handhelds are PCs, so open lasthavens.com/play in Chrome or Edge as on a desktop. Their built-in controls usually appear to the browser as a standard controller.
How do I save battery on a Steam Deck?
Open Interface Options, choose Browser, and set a frame rate limit of 30 or 40 frames per second. Lowering Render scale and the heavier video options helps too.
