The Dungeon Finder in Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a, and how to use it
The Dungeon Finder arrived in patch 3.3 and changed how people played Wrath of the Lich King. Instead of standing in a city shouting for a healer, you pick your roles, press a button and the game builds a group and teleports everyone into the dungeon. Patch 3.3.5a is the last version of it in Wrath, and it is how most players level, gear and run their daily heroic.
How to open it
Press I, or click the green eye button on the bottom bar. You can queue from level 15 for classic dungeons, and the list grows with your level all the way to the Northrend heroics at 80. Groups are five players: one tank, one healer and three damage dealers.
Picking roles
Tick every role your class and spec can do: tank, healer or damage. A Paladin, Druid, Warrior or Death Knight that ticks tank, or a Priest, Shaman, Druid or Paladin that ticks healer, usually gets a group much faster than a damage dealer, since every group needs exactly one of each. You can also tick Leader if you are happy to mark targets and set the pace.
If you queue for a role, be ready to play it. Pressing tank in your damage gear is the fastest way to a kick.
Random dungeon or specific dungeon
Random Dungeon puts you in any dungeon suitable for your level, and it is where the rewards are. Specific Dungeons lets you tick the ones you want, useful if you need a particular boss’s drop or quest. Random queues are usually faster, because you match with more players.
Rewards
At level 80, the first Random Heroic you complete each day gives extra Emblems of Frost, the best emblems in 3.3.5a, on top of what the bosses drop. Later random heroics that day give Emblems of Triumph. This daily heroic is a big part of gearing a fresh 80.
While levelling, the first random dungeon each day gives bonus experience and gold, and finishing any random dungeon gives a Satchel of Helpful Goods with a chance at a useful green or blue item for your level.
Grouping with players you didn’t queue with gives the Luck of the Draw buff, a small bonus to health, damage and healing for the group.
Rules worth knowing
- Deserter. Leaving a group before it finishes gives you a 30 minute debuff that blocks the queue.
- Vote to kick. Any player can start a vote to remove someone from the group. Use it for players who are away or disruptive, not for honest mistakes.
- Need, greed and disenchant. Roll need only on gear you will equip for your current spec. Greed on the rest, or disenchant if an Enchanter is in the group.
- Teleport back. Right click your portrait while in the group to teleport into or out of the dungeon.
Tips for a smoother run
- Know the route. The WotLK dungeons by level guide lists which dungeons appear at each level.
- Wait for the tank. Let the tank pull, and don’t attack before their first ability lands.
- Watch the healer’s mana. Short pauses for a drink save wipes.
- Bring boss warnings. Deadly Boss Mods is in the AddOn Library at the character select screen.
- Say hello. One line at the start makes a group of strangers a lot more patient.
A note on a single realm
On the original servers, the Dungeon Finder pulled players from many realms at once. On a single private realm, every group comes from players on that realm, so queue times depend on who is online. Tanks and healers pop almost instantly; damage dealers may wait longer at quiet hours. Queuing with a friend or two who fill the other roles is the quickest way in.
