WotLK gearing guide for a fresh level 80, from quest blues to raid ready

A fresh level 80 in Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a gears up in a clear order: fill the gaps with quest rewards and crafted pieces, run normal and then heroic dungeons through the Dungeon Finder, spend your emblems on epics, move on to the three Frozen Halls dungeons, and finish with enchants and gems before you look for a raid. Patch 3.3.5 is the most generous version of Wrath for catching up, because heroic dungeons hand out emblems that buy gear far better than anything that drops in them.

Step 1: quest rewards and crafted gear at 80

Most players hit 80 in a mix of green and blue quest rewards. Tidy that up first.

  • Finish the level 80 zones. The Storm Peaks and Icecrown have plenty of quests that only open at 80, and their rewards are a real step up from the gear you leveled in. The Icecrown quests also lead into the Argent Tournament, whose Champion’s Seals buy solid epic gear.
  • Check the Auction House for crafted pieces. Blacksmiths, leatherworkers and tailors can make epic armor at 80 that is better than most dungeon blues. Many of these patterns need Frozen Orbs, which drop in heroic dungeons, so they get cheaper as more players run heroics.
  • Use your own profession. If you craft, make your own best piece first. Jewelcrafters, enchanters and inscribers also get perks of their own, covered below.

Do not spend much gold on blues. Heroics replace them quickly.

Step 2: normal dungeons through the Dungeon Finder

The Dungeon Finder (press I, or use the button on your micro menu) builds a group for you and teleports you inside. Queue as tank, healer or damage, pick “Random Wrath of the Lich King Dungeon”, and wait for a group.

Normal dungeons at 80 drop rare (blue) gear. They are quick and forgiving, a good place to learn the instances. Run them until your quest greens are gone, then step up. If you skipped dungeons while leveling, the WotLK dungeons by level guide lists every Northrend instance in order.

Step 3: heroic dungeons and the daily random

Heroics are the core of gearing a fresh 80. Every Northrend dungeon has a heroic mode, there is no attunement or key, and you only need to be level 80. The Dungeon Finder does check your gear before it will put you into some heroics, so a few rounds of normals help.

What heroics give you:

  • Better drops. Heroic bosses drop gear a tier above normal mode, including epics from the final bosses.
  • Emblems of Triumph from every boss.
  • Emblems of Frost from the first random heroic you finish each day, on top of the normal rewards.
  • Frozen Orbs, which crafters need for epic patterns. You can use them yourself or sell them.

The daily random heroic is the best gearing habit in 3.3.5. Do at least one every day.

WotLK emblems: what each one buys

Wrath has five emblems, one for each stage of the expansion’s raids. They are currencies, not bag items, and you spend them at the emblem vendors in Dalaran.

Emblem Raid tier it matches What it buys in general
Emblem of Heroism Naxxramas era Tier 7 level gear, heirloom items
Emblem of Valor Naxxramas 25 era Better tier 7 pieces and off-set gear
Emblem of Conquest Ulduar era Tier 8 level gear and off-set pieces
Emblem of Triumph Trial of the Crusader era Tier 9 pieces, off-set epics, trinkets
Emblem of Frost Icecrown Citadel era Tier 10 pieces and the best emblem gear

In 3.3.5 the newer emblems are the ones you earn most easily from dungeons, and the vendors let you trade a newer emblem for an older one. Most fresh 80s skip the older emblem gear and save Emblems of Triumph for tier 9 and off-set epics, a big jump over heroic drops.

A common spending order:

  1. Your tier 9 set pieces with Emblems of Triumph, aiming for the set bonus first.
  2. Off-set epics and trinkets with any spare Triumph emblems.
  3. Tier 10 pieces and Frost gear once your Emblems of Frost add up, which takes longer.

If you are leveling an alt soon, a few Emblems of Heroism spent on heirlooms pay off well, since heirloom shoulders and chests add experience.

The Frozen Halls dungeons

The Frozen Halls are the three 5-player dungeons added with Icecrown Citadel, entered from the front of the citadel in Icecrown. They drop better gear than the older Northrend dungeons in both modes.

Dungeon Bosses
The Forge of Souls Bronjahm, Devourer of Souls
Pit of Saron Forgemaster Garfrost, Krick and Ick, Scourgelord Tyrannus
Halls of Reflection Falric, Marwyn, then the escape from the Lich King

Do them in that order. Their quests carry on from one to the next, and the Frozen Halls are harder than the older heroics, so the gear from the first two helps with the third. The escape at the end of Halls of Reflection is a test of healing and crowd control, and many groups wipe there the first time.

Normal Frozen Halls drops are around the level of Ulduar gear, and heroic drops a step above that, which makes them the best dungeon loot in the game for a fresh 80. Once your gear lets you clear them on heroic, you are close to raid ready.

Reputation rewards for gear and enchants

Running dungeons also builds reputation if you wear a faction’s tabard. At 80, the Argent Crusade, Knights of the Ebon Blade, Kirin Tor and Wyrmrest Accord tabards (and your faction’s Vanguard or Expedition) give you reputation for that faction from every kill in level 80 dungeons. Pick the faction whose rewards you need most and wear its tabard in every run.

The rewards that matter most for gearing:

Faction Key reward for gearing
Argent Crusade Head enchant for tanks (Arcanum of the Stalwart Protector)
Knights of the Ebon Blade Head enchant for physical damage (Arcanum of Torment)
Kirin Tor Head enchant for casters (Arcanum of Burning Mysteries)
Wyrmrest Accord Head enchant for healers (Arcanum of Blissful Mending)
Sons of Hodir Shoulder enchants, the best ones at Exalted

The head arcanums need Revered. Sons of Hodir has no tabard and is earned through daily quests in The Storm Peaks, so start them early. Each quartermaster also sells a few epic items at the higher standings that can fill a slot. The WotLK reputation guide covers each faction in more detail.

Enchants and gems for a fresh 80

Enchants and gems are cheap for what they add, and raid leaders notice when they are missing.

Enchants

  • Head and shoulders: the reputation enchants above. Inscribers get their own shoulder enchants instead.
  • Legs: leg armor from leatherworkers for physical classes and tanks, spellthread from tailors for casters and healers.
  • Belt: an Eternal Belt Buckle, made by blacksmiths, adds an extra gem socket.
  • Everything else: cloak, chest, bracers, gloves, boots and weapon all have enchants. Enchanters can also enchant their own rings.

Put an enchant on every piece you expect to keep. Skip expensive weapon enchants on a weapon you will replace in a week.

Gems

Wrath gems come in rare and epic quality, and every head piece with a meta socket wants a meta gem. A few rules cover most of it:

  • Meet the meta gem’s requirement. Most meta gems only work if you have enough gems of certain colors equipped. Check the tooltip.
  • Socket bonuses are optional. The widely held view is to take a bonus only when it is worth more than the gem you would give up.
  • Rare gems first, epic gems later. Epic gems cost far more. Put them in gear you plan to keep.

Jewelcrafters can also use Dragon’s Eyes, stronger gems only they can equip.

When you are ready for raids

There is no single number that says you are ready, but a few signs are widely used:

  • You have cleared heroic Frozen Halls without the group carrying you.
  • Most of your slots are emblem epics, crafted epics or Frozen Halls drops, with few blues left.
  • Everything is enchanted and gemmed.
  • You have met your role’s key caps. Tanks want 540 defense skill so raid bosses cannot land critical hits on them (feral druids get this from talents instead). Melee damage dealers aim for 8% hit and casters for 17% spell hit against raid bosses, counting talents and racials.

The older raids are the usual first steps for a new 80, and the gap between heroic gear and the Icecrown Citadel raid is large, so most players get a few raids of experience before they ask for a spot there. Deadly Boss Mods helps a great deal with learning fights; the best WotLK addons guide has more.

Gear up on Lasthavens

Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm with twice the normal experience, so you reach 80 and start gearing sooner. The real client runs in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android, with no 17 GB download and no launcher. The first visit downloads about 50 MB, and you make an account on the login screen with Create Account. Deadly Boss Mods, Skada and AtlasLoot are in the AddOn Library at character select, so you can see what every boss drops before you queue. Play Lasthavens and start your first random heroic.
