The best DPS class in Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a

Wrath of the Lich King has more viable damage specs than any expansion before it. Ten classes and more than twenty damage specs all cleared Icecrown Citadel in patch 3.3.5a, and the gap between the top and the middle is small next to the gap between a good player and a poor one. With that said, players have strong opinions about which specs pull ahead in fully geared ICC raids, and this post sums them up.

WotLK DPS tier list at a glance

This is how most players rank the damage specs in late Icecrown Citadel gear. Earlier in the expansion, with less gear, the order shifts a little, and fights that reward moving, cleaving or burst can shuffle it again.

Tier Melee Ranged and casters
Top Fury and Arms Warrior, Unholy Death Knight, Combat Rogue, Retribution Paladin Affliction Warlock, Fire and Arcane Mage
Strong Feral (cat) Druid, Frost Death Knight, Enhancement Shaman, Assassination Rogue Marksmanship and Survival Hunter, Shadow Priest, Demonology Warlock
Good Subtlety Rogue, Blood Death Knight (DPS) Balance Druid, Elemental Shaman, Frost Mage, Destruction Warlock, Beast Mastery Hunter

Warriors and Death Knights scale extremely well with the strength, armour penetration and haste of late gear, which is why they sit at the top of most ICC lists. Warlocks and Mages lead the casters. Every spec in the “Good” row is still welcome in a raid, and several of them bring buffs a group wants anyway.

The top melee specs

Fury Warrior. Titan’s Grip lets a Fury Warrior wield two two-handed weapons, and with heavy armour penetration gear it is one of the highest damage specs in the game. It is a strong cleaver with Whirlwind and Cleave, and it brings Battle Shout or Commanding Shout and Rampage for the raid’s crit. Arms is close behind, with a slower, more deliberate rotation.

Unholy Death Knight. A permanent ghoul, Gargoyle for burst, and diseases that tick on everything make Unholy very strong on long fights and on groups of enemies. It is also one of the more forgiving top specs to play. Frost is a close second, especially dual wielding. The Death Knight leveling guide covers getting one to 80.

Combat Rogue. Steady damage, Blade Flurry for two targets and Killing Spree for burst. Rogues bring Tricks of the Trade, which hands threat and damage to another player, and they rarely need to stop attacking to move. Assassination (Mutilate) is close on single targets.

Retribution Paladin. Patch 3.3 made Retribution one of the strongest melee specs, with a fixed priority of Judgement, Crusader Strike, Divine Storm and Consecration. It is easy to learn, and it brings blessings, Replenishment for the healers’ mana, and Hand of Salvation and Divine Sacrifice to protect others.

The top ranged specs

Affliction Warlock. Damage over time on the boss, a Haunt to keep up and Drain Soul at the end of the fight. Affliction is excellent on long single-target fights, and Warlocks bring Soulstones, Healthstones, the Ritual of Summoning and Curse of the Elements.

Fire Mage. Fire was the standard Mage spec of late ICC, with Living Bomb on several targets and Hot Streak procs for instant Pyroblasts. Arcane is just as strong on single targets with a burst at the start of every fight. Mages bring Arcane Intellect, Focus Magic, food and water, and crowd control.

Hunters. Marksmanship and Survival both do strong damage at range and can keep attacking while moving. Survival brings Replenishment, and every Hunter brings Misdirection, Trueshot Aura or Hunting Party, and a pet that can buff the raid.

Shadow Priest. Strong damage over time, and the spec brings Replenishment and Vampiric Embrace healing to the group. It starts slowly in fresh gear and gets very strong with haste.

What a spec brings matters as much as its damage

In Wrath, raid buffs are shared out so that many classes can provide each one, but a raid still needs someone for each. Some of the most valued:

  • Bloodlust or Heroism from a Shaman, which speeds up the whole raid for 40 seconds.
  • Replenishment from a Retribution Paladin, Shadow Priest, Survival Hunter, Destruction Warlock or Frost Mage, to keep healers’ mana up.
  • Spell damage taken debuffs from a Warlock’s Curse of the Elements, a Balance Druid’s Earth and Moon or an Unholy Death Knight’s Ebon Plaguebringer.
  • Armour reduction from a Warrior’s Sunder Armor or a Rogue’s Expose Armor.

This is why a Balance Druid or Elemental Shaman, lower on a pure damage chart, is still a strong pick: Moonkin Aura, Totem of Wrath and Bloodlust make everyone around them better.

How to choose your DPS spec

  1. You want to top the meters in late gear. Fury Warrior or Unholy Death Knight.
  2. You want to play at range and avoid melee mechanics. Affliction Warlock or Fire Mage.
  3. You want to move freely while dealing damage. A Hunter.
  4. You want something simple that still hits hard. Retribution Paladin or Unholy Death Knight.
  5. You want to switch to healing or tanking later. A Druid, Paladin, Shaman or Death Knight, all of which have a second role in the same class.

If you are still choosing a class, read the best class to level solo first, then the best tank and best healer posts for the other two roles. The best race for each class is worth a look too.
