The best healer in Wrath of the Lich King, and how to pick yours
There is no single best healer in Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a, and that is one of the expansion’s strengths. All five healing specs can clear every dungeon and raid in the game. The widely held view is that Discipline Priest and Holy Paladin are the strongest at keeping a tank alive, Restoration Druid and Holy Priest shine when the whole raid is taking damage, and Restoration Shaman is the steady all-rounder that every group is glad to have. Which one is best for you depends on how you like to play, and below is what each spec actually does.
WotLK healer tier list at a glance
Tier lists change with the raid and the group, so this table reflects widely shared views, not a hard ranking.
| Spec | Best at | Signature tools | Common view |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discipline Priest | Tank healing, preventing damage | Power Word: Shield, Penance, Pain Suppression, Divine Aegis | Top tier, especially in raids with heavy burst |
| Holy Paladin | Tank healing, big single-target heals | Beacon of Light, Holy Light, Holy Shock, Sacred Shield | Top tier tank healer, weak at group healing |
| Restoration Druid | Raid healing, healing on the move | Rejuvenation, Lifebloom, Wild Growth, Swiftmend | Top tier raid healer |
| Holy Priest | Raid healing, group burst | Circle of Healing, Prayer of Healing, Guardian Spirit | Strong raid healer with great tools |
| Restoration Shaman | Grouped-up healing, utility | Chain Heal, Riptide, Earth Shield, Bloodlust or Heroism | Solid in every role, valued for utility |
Discipline Priest: stop the damage before it lands
Discipline is the healer that prevents damage instead of repairing it. Power Word: Shield absorbs incoming hits, and Weakened Soul stops you shielding the same target again for a short time, so you spread shields around and fill the gaps with heals. Divine Aegis turns your critical heals into an extra absorb on the target, Rapture gives you mana back when your shields are used up, and Penance, the spec’s top talent, fires a quick burst of heals. Pain Suppression cuts the damage a target takes for a short time.
Disc is widely considered one of the best tank healers in WotLK, and shields across the raid are strong before big hits. The catch is that it plays a little differently from every other healer, so it takes time to learn when to shield and when to heal.
Holy Priest: the raid healer with a full toolbox
Holy is the Priest spec for healing lots of people at once. Circle of Healing is an instant heal that hits several injured players around the target, and Prayer of Healing heals your whole party. Renew is a heal over time, Prayer of Mending bounces from player to player as they take damage, and Divine Hymn heals the raid in an emergency.
The top talent, Guardian Spirit, increases the healing a target receives and saves them from a killing blow. Serendipity rewards you for using your quick heals by speeding up your bigger ones.
Holy is a comfortable choice in raids where damage is spread across everyone, and a good spec for players who like having an answer to every situation.
Holy Paladin: Beacon of Light and tank healing
The Holy Paladin is the classic tank healer of Wrath. Beacon of Light, its top talent, marks one target, and every heal you cast on someone else also heals the beacon target. Put Beacon on one tank, heal the other, and both get healed. That one talent is why so many raid leaders want a Holy Paladin on their tanks.
The core of the spec is simple: Holy Light for big heals, Flash of Light for cheaper ones, and Holy Shock for an instant heal. Sacred Shield puts a small shield on a target that refreshes as they take damage. Plate armour, Hand of Sacrifice, Lay on Hands and Divine Plea for mana round out the kit.
The weakness is group healing. A Holy Paladin has no real heal that hits several people at once, so on fights where the whole raid takes damage, it leans on the other healers.
Restoration Shaman: Chain Heal and Earth Shield
The Resto Shaman is known for Chain Heal, which jumps between injured players and is at its best when the group stands close together. Riptide, the top talent, is an instant heal with a heal over time that also boosts your next Chain Heal. Tidal Waves speeds up your bigger heals after you use Chain Heal or Riptide.
Earth Shield is the tank’s best friend: place it on the tank and it heals them every time they are hit. Totems add more to the group, including Healing Stream Totem and Mana Tide Totem, and Shamans bring Bloodlust (Horde) or Heroism (Alliance), one of the most valuable buffs in the game.
Shamans are widely seen as never the wrong pick: steady healing, excellent utility, and good at both tank and group healing.
Restoration Druid: heals over time and healing on the move
The Resto Druid heals mostly with effects that tick over time. Rejuvenation and Regrowth cover the raid, Lifebloom stacks up to three times on a tank and blooms for a big heal at the end, and Wild Growth, the top talent, puts a heal over time on several players at once. Swiftmend consumes a Rejuvenation or Regrowth for an instant heal, and Nourish heals more on targets that already have your effects on them.
Because the work is done ahead of time, Resto Druids excel on fights with lots of movement. In Tree of Life form you also boost the healing of everyone around you. Druids bring Innervate for mana and Rebirth, a combat resurrection, which raid leaders always value.
The common view is that Resto Druids are among the best raid healers in WotLK. The trade-off is that a heal over time is slow to react to a sudden spike, so you learn to keep effects rolling before the damage arrives.
Best healer for dungeons vs raids
In five-player dungeons and heroics the damage is mostly on one tank. Every healer is fine here, but a few stand out:
- Discipline Priest and Holy Paladin make the tank feel safe, and Disc shields smooth over bad pulls.
- Restoration Druid is forgiving because HoTs keep working while you move or line of sight a caster.
- Restoration Shaman keeps the tank topped up with Earth Shield and saves the group with Chain Heal.
In raids, healers are given jobs. A typical group wants one or two tank healers (Holy Paladin and Disc Priest are the usual picks) and several raid healers (Resto Druid, Holy Priest and Resto Shaman). A mix of healers beats a stack of one class, because each covers what the others lack. If you are heading into Icecrown Citadel, our ICC raid guide goes through the bosses.
Leveling as a healer in WotLK
Healing specs are slow at killing things alone, so most healers level in a damage spec and switch later. At level 40 you can learn Dual Talent Specialization from your class trainer, which lets you keep a healing spec and a damage spec and swap between them out of combat. Many players level as Shadow, Retribution, Enhancement, or Balance or Feral, and switch to healing for dungeons.
Some players level as healers entirely through dungeons, since healers are almost always in demand and finding a group is easier. The WotLK dungeons by level guide lists which dungeon to run at each stage. Of the healing classes, Paladins and Druids are the comfortable solo levelers, while Priests start slower. The best class to level solo guide compares them all.
How to choose your healer
A few questions narrow it down quickly:
- Do you like preventing damage and planning ahead? Play a Discipline Priest.
- Do you want to keep the tank alive with big, reliable heals? Play a Holy Paladin.
- Do you like keeping the whole raid alive and reacting to chaos? Play a Holy Priest.
- Do you like moving a lot and keeping effects rolling? Play a Restoration Druid.
- Do you want to be useful in every group and bring Bloodlust? Play a Restoration Shaman.
Also think about what else you want to do. A Druid can tank, heal and deal damage, a Paladin can tank too, and a Priest becomes a strong Shadow damage dealer. For the other side of the group, see the best WotLK tank.
Healers live on their raid frames, so a frames addon helps. Grid2 is a favourite for healers, and the best WotLK addons guide covers others worth having.
