The best professions in WotLK 3.3.5a, and what each one gives you at 450

In Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a every character can learn two primary professions and all three secondary ones, and every profession goes up to 450 skill. The short answer to “which professions are best” is this: if you are leveling, take two gathering professions such as Herbalism and Mining for gold and a little extra experience. At 80, every crafting profession gives a personal bonus worth roughly the same amount in a raid, so pick the one whose crafts you will use or sell. The rest of this guide covers each profession’s perk, the secondary professions, and the pairings that work best.

How professions work in WotLK

  • Two primary professions per character. You can drop one at any trainer and pick another, but you lose all your skill in the old one.
  • The skill cap is 450. You learn it in ranks from trainers: Apprentice (75), Journeyman (150), Expert (225), Artisan (300), Master (375) and Grand Master (450). Grand Master is taught by trainers in Northrend, including Dalaran.
  • Gathering and crafting. Herbalism, Mining and Skinning collect materials. The other nine primary professions turn materials into gear, consumables and gems.
  • Secondary professions don’t count against the limit. Cooking, First Aid and Fishing can all be learned on top of your two primary professions.

WotLK profession bonuses at max skill

Since Wrath, every primary profession gives something only you can use. Blizzard tuned these bonuses to be close to each other in value, so the gap between the best and worst perk is small. The table gives the short version, and each profession has a section below.

Profession Type Personal bonus at high skill
Alchemy Crafting Mixology: your elixirs and flasks last longer and are stronger
Blacksmithing Crafting Extra gem sockets on your bracers and gloves
Enchanting Crafting Enchants on both of your rings
Engineering Crafting Tinkers for gloves, belt and cloak, plus engineer-only gadgets
Inscription Crafting Master’s Inscription shoulder enchants
Jewelcrafting Crafting Dragon’s Eye gems, stronger than normal epic gems
Leatherworking Crafting Fur Lining bracer enchants
Tailoring Crafting Cloak embroideries that proc in combat
Herbalism Gathering Lifeblood, a self-heal on a three-minute cooldown
Mining Gathering Toughness, up to 60 extra stamina
Skinning Gathering Master of Anatomy, extra critical strike rating

Alchemy

Alchemists get Mixology, which makes the elixirs and flasks they can brew last longer and give more stats when they drink them. They also make Alchemist’s Stone trinkets, which boost the potions you use, and transmutes such as the epic gem transmutes that sell well. Alchemy pairs naturally with Herbalism.

Blacksmithing

At high skill a blacksmith can add a socket to their bracers and a socket to their gloves. That is two extra gems, which is why Blacksmithing is a favourite for melee players who stack one main stat. Blacksmiths also craft plate armour and weapons for others.

Enchanting

Enchanters can enchant their own rings, for example +40 attack power or +23 spell power on each ring. Enchanting needs no gathering partner because you get your materials by disenchanting gear, and selling enchants or materials is a steady earner.

Engineering

Engineering is widely considered the most fun profession, and many PvP players pick it. Engineers can add tinkers to their gear: Hyperspeed Accelerators or Hand-Mounted Pyro Rocket on gloves, Nitro Boosts on a belt and a parachute on a cloak. They also get engineer-only goggles, a Wormhole Generator to Northrend, a repair bot and a two-seat motorcycle mount. The downside is that the profession earns very little gold.

Inscription

New in Wrath, Inscription turns milled herbs into inks, and inks into glyphs. The scribe’s perk is Master’s Inscription shoulder enchants, which are better than the Sons of Hodir shoulder enchants and need no reputation. Scribes also make Darkmoon Cards (the deck trinkets are among the better trinkets of their item level) and sell glyphs, which every player buys.

Jewelcrafting

Jewelcrafters can cut Dragon’s Eye gems, which are noticeably stronger than normal epic gems; you can wear up to three at once. Cutting gems for other players is one of the best gold makers in the game, especially paired with Mining and prospecting.

Leatherworking

Leatherworkers can apply Fur Lining to their own bracers, a stronger enchant than anyone else can put there. They also craft leather and mail armour, leg armour kits and drums that buff the whole group.

Tailoring

Tailors add embroideries to their own cloak: Lightweave for spell power, Darkglow for mana and Swordguard for attack power, each a chance-on-hit effect. Tailoring also makes Frostweave bags, which always sell, and needs no gathering partner because cloth drops from humanoid enemies.

Herbalism, Mining and Skinning

The gathering professions give smaller passive perks:

  • Herbalism: Lifeblood, an instant self-heal over a few seconds on a three-minute cooldown.
  • Mining: Toughness, up to 60 extra stamina at 450 skill.
  • Skinning: Master of Anatomy, extra critical strike rating at 450 skill.

These bonuses are a little weaker than the crafting perks, which is why many raiders swap a gathering profession for a second crafting one at 80.

Secondary professions: Cooking, First Aid and Fishing

All three secondary professions also go up to 450, and all three are worth learning.

Profession Why level it
Cooking Stat food for raids, including the Fish Feast for the whole group; Dalaran cooking dailies
First Aid Heavy Frostweave Bandages, a heal that costs no mana and works for every class
Fishing Fish for cooking, Dalaran fishing dailies, and a relaxing way to make gold

Cooking and Fishing go together: the fish you catch become the food you cook. Both have daily quests in Dalaran. First Aid levels quickly from the cloth you collect while leveling, and bandages are useful in PvP and when soloing.

Best professions for leveling

While you level, gathering is the clear winner. You collect materials as you quest, sell them for gold, and picking herbs and mining nodes gives a little experience as well. Gold matters because you need it for riding training and, later, flying.

  • Herbalism and Mining. The classic leveling pair. Both nodes show on the minimap, and both sell well.
  • Mining and Skinning. Good for melee classes who kill a lot of beasts.
  • Herbalism and Skinning. Works well for druids, who can pick herbs while shapeshifted.

You can switch to crafting at 80, when you have gold to buy materials. If you want help planning the route itself, see our WotLK leveling guide.

Best professions for gold

The best gold pairs are a gathering profession with the crafting profession that uses its materials, so you never pay for your own supplies.

Pairing How it makes gold
Herbalism and Inscription Glyphs sell to every class, and you mill your own herbs
Mining and Jewelcrafting Prospect your own ore and cut gems for raiders
Herbalism and Alchemy Flasks, potions and transmutes
Tailoring and Enchanting Disenchant the cloth gear you make
Skinning and Leatherworking Leg armour kits, drums and leather gear

For specific ways to turn these into steady income, read the WotLK gold making guide.

Best professions for raiding

For raiding, the widely held view is that the perks are close enough in value that you should pick professions that suit your role and that you enjoy. Common choices:

  • Melee: Blacksmithing and Jewelcrafting, for extra gems of your main stat.
  • Casters: Tailoring and Enchanting, or Jewelcrafting and Inscription.
  • Tanks: Blacksmithing, Jewelcrafting or Mining for stamina and stat gems.
  • PvP: Engineering, for its gloves, belt and gadgets.

Two crafting professions give the largest total bonus, so serious raiders often drop gathering at 80. Our WotLK gearing guide explains where profession items fit into a full set, and the Icecrown Citadel raid guide covers the endgame raid you are working toward.
