How to make gold in WotLK 3.3.5a, from dailies to the auction house

The steadiest way to make gold in Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a is to do daily quests at level 80, carry two gathering professions (or one gathering and one crafting), and sell what you gather or make on the auction house. Add a few habits that stop gold leaking away, and you will afford your epic flying, dual specialization and enchants without grinding for hours. This guide covers each part, with no made-up prices: the market on every realm is different, so learn to read your own.

Daily quests at 80

Once you reach level 80, quests stop giving experience and give extra gold instead. That makes daily quests the backbone of most gold plans. You can complete up to 25 daily quests a day, which is more than most players do.

Daily hub Where What you get besides gold
Argent Tournament Icecrown Champion’s Seals, Argent Crusade reputation, mounts and pets
Sons of Hodir The Storm Peaks Reputation for shoulder enchants, unlocked by a quest chain
Knights of the Ebon Blade Icecrown (The Shadow Vault) Reputation for head enchants
Wyrmrest Accord Dragonblight Reputation and a drake mount at exalted
Frenzyheart Tribe or the Oracles Sholazar Basin Reputation and their reward boxes
Cooking and fishing dailies Dalaran Cooking awards, fishing rewards

The Argent Tournament is the biggest single hub. Once you work your way up to champion, you have a long list of dailies in one place, most of them quick. Read the Argent Tournament guide for how to unlock them, and the WotLK reputation guide for which factions reward you most.

The Dalaran cooking and fishing dailies are worth doing even if you skip everything else. They are short, they give gold, and the fishing daily’s reward bag can contain something extra.

Tip: pick dailies that are close together. A set of quests in one zone, done in one trip, earns more per minute than chasing single quests across Northrend.

Gathering professions and what sells

Gathering is the simplest gold in the game. You need no recipes and no market knowledge, just a route and patience. Every crafter needs your materials, so they always sell.

Mining: Saronite and Titanium

Cobalt Ore is the first Northrend ore, found in the starting zones. Saronite Ore needs 400 mining and is the main ore of the expansion. Titanium Ore needs 450 and turns up as rarer veins in the same higher-level zones.

  • Saronite sells to blacksmiths, engineers and jewelcrafters, who prospect it for gems. It moves in large volumes.
  • Titanium is the valuable one. It is smelted into Titanium Bars and used for Titansteel, which goes into crafted epics. It is rare enough that it usually sells well.
  • Where: Sholazar Basin, The Storm Peaks, Icecrown and Wintergrasp all have plenty of Saronite, with Titanium among it. Sholazar is a popular choice because it is open, easy to fly over and full of nodes.

Herbalism: Frost Lotus and Northrend herbs

Herb Main zones Who buys it
Goldclover, Tiger Lily Borean Tundra, Howling Fjord, Grizzly Hills, Sholazar Basin Alchemists, scribes
Talandra’s Rose Zul’Drak Alchemists, scribes
Adder’s Tongue Sholazar Basin Alchemists, scribes
Lichbloom, Icethorn The Storm Peaks, Icecrown Alchemists for flasks, scribes
Frost Lotus A chance from Northrend herbs, and its own plant in Wintergrasp Alchemists for flasks and transmutes

Frost Lotus is the prize: it goes into flasks, which raiders use every night. Lichbloom and Icethorn are also in steady demand for the same reason. Scribes mill every Northrend herb for pigments, so even the cheaper herbs sell while people level Inscription and make glyphs.

Skinning: Borean Leather and more

Skinning pairs well with any class that kills a lot of beasts. Northrend beasts give Borean Leather, with a chance of Arctic Fur. Some creatures give special leathers: jormungar give Jormungar Scale, nerubians give Nerubian Chitin, and dragonkin give Icy Dragonscale.

  • Borean Leather sells steadily to leatherworkers, who use it for armor kits and leg armor.
  • Where: Sholazar Basin and Borean Tundra are full of beasts. Skinning what you kill while doing dailies adds up without any extra trips.

Elementals

Elementals in Northrend drop Crystallized elements, and ten of the same kind combine into an Eternal. Eternals are used in Titansteel, enchanting and many high-level recipes, so they sell well. If you farm ore or herbs in a zone with elementals, kill them on the way.

Crafting that sells

Crafting can make more gold than gathering, but it needs more attention: you buy or gather materials, craft, and only profit if the finished item sells for more than its parts. Read the WotLK professions guide to choose a pair. These are the crafts that are widely known to sell in 3.3.5a:

  • Inscription: glyphs. Every class uses glyphs, players change them when they change specs, and new characters buy them as they level. Many glyphs each selling a few at a time adds up.
  • Jewelcrafting: cut gems. Raiders and PvP players replace gems whenever they get new gear. The jewelcrafting daily in Dalaran gives tokens that buy new designs.
  • Alchemy: flasks, potions and transmutes. Flasks are used up every raid night. Transmutes turn cheaper materials into more valuable ones on a cooldown.
  • Enchanting: scrolls and disenchanting. Enchanters can put enchants on vellum and sell the scrolls on the auction house. Disenchanting dungeon greens and blues gives Infinite Dust, Cosmic Essences, Dream Shards and Abyss Crystals.
  • Tailoring: Frostweave Bags. Everyone wants bag space, and Frostweave Cloth drops from humanoids across Northrend.
  • Leatherworking and Tailoring: leg enchants. Leg armors and spellthreads go on every new pair of trousers.
  • Cooking: Fish Feast. Raid groups use it every night, and you can fish the ingredients yourself.

A good rule: make what people use up. Flasks, food, gems, glyphs and enchants are bought again and again, while a crafted piece of gear sells once.

Auction house basics

The auction house is where most of your gold is actually made. A few basics:

  • There is a deposit. Posting an auction costs a deposit, which you lose if the item does not sell. Longer auctions cost a bigger deposit.
  • The auction house takes a cut. When an item sells, a percentage of the price goes to the auction house. The neutral auction houses in Booty Bay, Gadgetzan and Everlook trade between factions but take a much bigger cut.
  • Check prices before you post. Search for the item and see what it is listed at. Post at or just below the lowest sensible price, not far below it.
  • Do not race to the bottom. If someone has posted far too cheaply, you do not have to follow. Wait, or buy their cheap stock if you are sure it sells for more.
  • Sell in the stacks buyers want. Crafters often buy ore and herbs in full stacks of 20. Single gems, glyphs and potions sell one at a time.
  • Post when people are online. Evenings and weekends are usually busiest, which is when raiders restock.
  • Know when to vendor. Some items sell to a vendor for more than anyone pays at auction. Check the vendor price before you post.

Farming spots in Northrend

What to farm Where
Saronite and Titanium Sholazar Basin, The Storm Peaks, Icecrown, Wintergrasp
Lichbloom and Icethorn The Storm Peaks, Icecrown
Adder’s Tongue Sholazar Basin
Borean Leather Sholazar Basin, Borean Tundra
Frostweave Cloth Humanoids in any Northrend zone, especially where they pack close together
Frost Lotus Any Northrend herbs, plus its own nodes in Wintergrasp

Flying makes farming much faster, so Cold Weather Flying at 77 pays for itself. Some classes farm better than others because they can kill groups of enemies alone or survive while they gather; the best WotLK class for solo play covers which ones. Lasthavens is a PvP realm, so expect the other faction in the busy farming zones and keep an eye on your surroundings.

Habits that save gold

Making gold is only half of it. These habits stop it leaking away:

  • Sell your grey items. Empty grey loot at every vendor you pass. It is free gold.
  • Avoid dying. Every death costs durability, and repairs at 80 are not cheap. Fight in safe places and stop before you wipe.
  • Collect materials as you go. Herbs, ore and leather you pass while questing or doing dailies are free.
  • Do not buy what you can farm. If you have the time, gathering a material yourself is cheaper than buying it.
  • Buy in quiet hours. Prices often drop when fewer players are online. Stock up on what you need then.
  • Plan big purchases. Epic flying and dual specialization are the big costs at 80. Save for them before spending on luxuries.
  • Keep your bags organised. Space is gold: an addon like AdiBags makes it easier to see what is worth selling. The best WotLK addons guide lists more.
