Naxxramas in Wrath of the Lich King, every wing and boss explained

Naxxramas is the first raid most players see at level 80. The necropolis floats over Dragonblight, and in Wrath of the Lich King it returned from the original game, retuned for level 80 in 10 and 25 player versions. It has 15 bosses across four wings and a final pair in the Frostwyrm Lair, and it is the best place to learn raiding before Ulduar and Icecrown Citadel.

Getting there and getting ready

The entrance is a teleporter under the necropolis, in eastern Dragonblight. There is no attunement and no key. Fresh level 80 gear from heroic dungeons is plenty for the 10 player version, and the gearing guide covers getting there.

The four wings can be done in any order. Each ends at a portal back to the entrance, and clearing all four opens the Frostwyrm Lair. A common order is Arachnid, Plague, Military, then Construct, which puts the bosses that check your gear and coordination last.

The Arachnid Quarter

Anub’Rekhan. A tank kites him around the room during Locust Swarm, which slows and damages anyone close. Kill the Crypt Guard adds as they spawn.

Grand Widow Faerlina. Her worshippers can be killed next to her to stop her enrage, so save them for when she enrages rather than killing them all at the start. Spread out for Rain of Fire and Poison Bolt Volley.

Maexxna. She wraps a player in a web against the wall; ranged break them out. Every so often Web Spray stuns the whole raid, so healers top up the tank first. Kill the spiderlings with area damage.

The Plague Quarter

Noth the Plaguebringer. Noth blinks around, curses players (dispel them) and teleports to his balcony while skeletons attack. Kill the adds, then return to Noth when he comes back down.

Heigan the Unclean. The “safety dance”. The floor is split into sections that erupt in turn, and the raid moves across them in a wave. On the platform phase, the raid dances faster. Watch the floor, not your bars.

Loatheb. Necrotic Aura blocks healing for most of each cycle, so healers wait for the short window and heal hard. Spores spawn around the room; killing one gives nearby players more crit, so groups take turns standing on them.

The Military Quarter

Instructor Razuvious. Two priests (or any players) use the Obedience Crystals to mind control the Death Knight Understudies and tank Razuvious with them, swapping as his Disrupting Shout lands. It is one of the most unusual fights in the game.

Gothik the Harvester. The raid splits into two sides, the living and the dead. Adds killed on the living side reappear as undead on the other side. After a few minutes the gate opens and Gothik comes down to fight.

The Four Horsemen. Four bosses, each placing a stacking mark on players near them. Tanks rotate between the bosses so no one gets too many marks, and the raid kills them one at a time.

The Construct Quarter

Patchwerk. A pure gear and damage check. Hateful Strike hits a second high-health target near him, so several tanks or off-tanks stand in melee. Healers keep them all topped up while damage dealers burn him down before he enrages.

Grobbulus. Mutating Injection marks a player who must run to the edge of the room before it explodes into a poison cloud. The tank moves him slowly around the room so the clouds stay behind.

Gluth. He periodically Decimates, dropping everyone to low health. A kiter takes the Zombie Chow around the room, and area damage after Decimate kills them before Gluth eats them and heals.

Thaddius. First kill Stalagg and Feugen on their platforms at the same time. Then Thaddius gives every player a positive or negative charge with Polarity Shift. Stand with your own charge for a damage bonus; standing next to the opposite one hurts the people around you. Jumping across the gap to his platform is a rite of passage.

The Frostwyrm Lair

Sapphiron. A frost dragon. On the ground she uses Life Drain (decurse it) and Blizzard; in the air she places players in Ice Blocks and then casts Frost Breath, and the raid hides behind those blocks to survive.

Kel’Thuzad. Phase one is waves of adds while he watches. Phase two he fights directly with Frostbolt (interrupt it), Frost Blast, Detonate Mana and Shadow Fissures that kill anyone who stays on them. In the 25 player version, Chains of Kel’Thuzad mind control players. In phase three, Guardians of Icecrown join the fight and need to be tanked or crowd controlled with Shackle Undead.

Achievements and rewards

Naxxramas drops item level 200 gear in the 10 player version and 213 in the 25 player version, along with tier 7 tokens. The achievements most players chase:

  • The Undying (10) and The Immortal (25): clear the whole raid without anyone dying.
  • Make Quick Werk of Him: kill Patchwerk within three minutes.
  • The Safety Dance: defeat Heigan without anyone dying.
  • Shocking!: defeat Thaddius without anyone crossing the charges.

Many of these count toward Glory of the Raider, which rewards a Plagued Proto-Drake (10) or Black Proto-Drake (25). The achievements and mounts guide covers the full meta.

Naxxramas’s neighbours: Obsidian Sanctum and Eye of Eternity

Two smaller raids came out alongside it. The Obsidian Sanctum, under Wyrmrest Temple, is one boss, Sartharion, with three optional drakes that make the fight harder and the rewards better; killing him with all three up gives the Twilight Drake mount in the 25 player version. The Eye of Eternity is the fight against Malygos, which ends in an aerial battle on drakes.

Raid Naxxramas on Lasthavens

Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm with twice the normal experience from kills, quests and exploring, so you reach 80 and the necropolis sooner. It plays in your browser, with no 17 GB download and no launcher, on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android. Deadly Boss Mods is in the AddOn Library at the character select screen and warns you about every mechanic above.

Play Lasthavens now, or read how playing in a browser works first.
