Wintergrasp guide: how the battle for the fortress works, and what winning gets you

Wintergrasp is the world PvP zone in Northrend where the Alliance and the Horde fight for a single fortress. Every few hours a battle starts: one faction defends Wintergrasp Fortress, the other attacks it with siege vehicles, and the battle lasts up to 30 minutes. If the attackers break into the keep and capture the relic at its heart, they take the fortress. If the defenders hold out until the timer runs down, they keep it. Whichever faction controls Wintergrasp afterwards gets access to the Vault of Archavon raid, extra rewards and a buff across Northrend until the next battle.

What Wintergrasp is

Wintergrasp sits in western Northrend, between the Borean Tundra, Sholazar Basin and Dragonblight. It is built for level 80 characters. Between battles the zone is quiet: it has daily and weekly quests, vendors and the entrance to the Vault of Archavon, and you can fly over it. When a battle begins, flying stops working over the zone and the fight becomes a large, open battleground in the middle of the world, without the fixed team size of a normal battleground.

That is what makes it different from Warsong Gulch or Arathi Basin. You are not queuing into a separate map with ten or fifteen people. You are joining a fight in the open world, often with a full raid on each side, and the zone keeps the result after the battle ends. For the instanced side of PvP, see the arena and battlegrounds guide.

How Wintergrasp works: attackers and defenders

Each battle has one defending faction, the one that holds the fortress, and one attacking faction.

The attackers start at their camps in the south of the zone. Their job is to build siege vehicles, drive them north, smash through the fortress walls and gates, break down the door of the keep, and then reach and capture the Titan Relic inside. Capturing the relic wins the battle immediately, and the attackers become the new defenders.

The defenders start inside the fortress. Their job is to destroy vehicles before they reach the walls, keep the walls and the keep door standing, and hold out until the battle timer reaches zero. The fortress has cannons on its walls and towers that any defender can climb into and fire at incoming vehicles.

The three towers in the south of the zone belong to the attacking side. If the defenders push out and destroy them, the attackers lose time from their clock, which makes them a worthwhile target for a defending group that can spare the players.

Attackers Defenders
Start Camps in the south Inside Wintergrasp Fortress
Goal Breach the walls and keep, capture the Titan Relic Hold the fortress until the timer runs out
Main tools Siege vehicles, captured workshops Wall and tower cannons, their own vehicles
Bonus objective Hold workshops to build more vehicles Destroy the attackers’ southern towers to cut their time

Siege vehicles and workshops

Wintergrasp is a vehicle fight first. Players on foot matter, but walls fall to siege weapons, and vehicles are what both sides spend most of the battle trying to protect or destroy.

Workshops

Workshops are capture points spread across the zone, and each faction also has workshops of its own. Every workshop your side holds lets you build vehicles there, and the more workshops your faction holds, the more vehicles it can have in the field at once. Taking a workshop from the enemy both raises your own vehicle limit and lowers theirs, so the fights around them are often as important as the fight at the walls.

You capture a workshop much like a tower in other world PvP zones: stand near it with more of your faction than the enemy has until the bar moves to your side. Each workshop has a mechanic NPC who builds the vehicles.

The vehicles

Vehicle Rank needed What it is good at
Catapult Corporal Light and fast. Good for harassing and for reaching the fight quickly.
Demolisher Corporal Heavier hits against walls and gates, with seats for passengers.
Siege Engine First Lieutenant Slow and heavily armored, with a turret seat for a second player. The main wall breaker.

Defenders can build vehicles too, and the fortress cannons hit hard. A group of attacking vehicles that arrives together, with players on foot around it, does far better than vehicles trickling in one at a time.

Ranks: Recruit, Corporal, First Lieutenant

Everyone starts a battle as a Recruit. Recruits cannot build vehicles. Earning honorable kills during the battle promotes you, first to Corporal and then to First Lieutenant, and a promotion only takes a handful of kills. Corporal lets you build Catapults and Demolishers. First Lieutenant also unlocks the Siege Engine.

This is why the first minutes of an attack matter. Players who get stuck in early, around the workshops and the first skirmishes, rank up quickly and can start building the vehicles that win the battle.

Tenacity: the buff for the outnumbered side

Wintergrasp has no team size cap in the usual sense, so one faction often turns up with more players than the other. To keep the battle from being decided by headcount alone, the side with fewer players gets Tenacity, a stacking buff that raises their health and the damage and healing they do. The bigger the gap in numbers, the more stacks the smaller side gets, and vehicles driven by that side are boosted as well.

Tenacity does not make a small group equal to a much bigger one, but it does make a determined, organized minority dangerous. A few well-healed players with stacks of Tenacity can hold a gate or a workshop for a long time.

What winning Wintergrasp gets you

Vault of Archavon access

The biggest prize is the Vault of Archavon, a raid instance under the fortress that only the faction controlling Wintergrasp can enter. It closes during the battle, and when the fortress changes hands, the other faction gets the keys.

The Vault has four bosses in 3.3.5a, one for each raid tier of the expansion. Each one is a single fight with no trash to clear, which makes the Vault a quick weekly visit for a raid group.

Boss Added in Loot tied to
Archavon the Stone Watcher Patch 3.0 Tier 7 and matching PvP gear
Emalon the Storm Watcher Patch 3.1 Tier 8 and matching PvP gear
Koralon the Flame Watcher Patch 3.2 Tier 9 and matching PvP gear
Toravon the Ice Watcher Patch 3.3 Tier 10 and matching PvP gear

The bosses drop set pieces and PvP gear for the classes in your raid, in both 10 and 25 player versions, and they can also drop the Grand Black War Mammoth mount. Read the gearing guide for where the Vault fits into a character’s progress.

Stone Keeper’s Shards and other rewards

Winning, and even taking part, pays out honor. The winning side gets a larger share, along with marks of honor for Wintergrasp. Wintergrasp also has its own currency, Stone Keeper’s Shards. You earn them from the zone’s quests and from the battle itself, and the faction holding the fortress has more ways to earn them. You spend them at the Wintergrasp vendors on gear and other items.

Wintergrasp tips

  • Get to the zone before the battle starts. Players already in Wintergrasp are invited to join when a battle begins, and arriving late can mean missing the early kills that earn your rank.
  • Rank up early. Fight around the first workshops and skirmishes to reach Corporal fast, then First Lieutenant.
  • Protect your vehicles. As an attacker on foot, your job is to keep enemy players off your Siege Engines and Demolishers. Healers who follow vehicles are worth a lot.
  • Defenders, use the cannons. The wall and tower cannons are free damage against vehicles, and one player in a cannon can stop a lone Siege Engine.
  • Watch the workshops. Losing a workshop means losing vehicles. A small group retaking one in the middle of the fight can swing a battle.
  • Bring explosives if you are an engineer. Engineering bombs and charges are useful against vehicles and structures.
  • Do not chase kills away from the objective. Wintergrasp is won at the walls and the keep, not in the middle of the zone.
  • Check the timer. Attackers who are short of time should go all in on the keep. Defenders who are ahead can afford to push out at the southern towers.

Addons help in a fight this big. A damage meter and good unit frames make it easier to see what is happening; the best WotLK addons guide covers the popular ones.

Play Wrath of the Lich King on Lasthavens

Lasthavens is a free Wrath of the Lich King 3.3.5a realm, and it is a PvP realm, so the other faction is a threat anywhere in Northrend, not only in Wintergrasp. Experience from kills, quests and exploring is twice the normal rate, which gets you to level 80 and into Northrend’s PvP sooner.

The real 3.3.5a client runs in your web browser, on Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPhone, iPad and Android, with no 17 GB download and no launcher. The first visit downloads about 50 MB to reach the login screen. You make an account on the login screen with Create Account, and an email address is optional.
